Smart antenna technology has been integrated into the TD-SCDMA standard as an important part, and has acted as a valuable role of successful operations of the whole system.

A smart antenna is composed of an array of multiple antenna elements and calibration network. Instead of a single fixed beam pattern from a traditional antenna, the smart antenna can dynamically generate multiple beam patterns, each pointed to a particular mobile; such beam patterns can adapt to track any user equipment intelligently.

Thanks to the same propagation characteristic of the up- and downlink channels of TDD mode operation in TD-SCDMA, Smart Antennas can greatly improve the channel estimation and beam forming accuracy.

Due to narrow beam, inter-cell and intra-cell interferences can be

reduced obviously, In addition, Smart Antennas optimize the link budget and increase the capacity of a TD-SCDMA operator's radio interface.
